MSCI is a leading provider of global and domestic equity indices

For over 40 years, MSCI has designed and calculated market-leading global equity indices which have become the most widely adopted global equity benchmarks among institutional investors and serve as the basis for over 350 exchanged traded funds throughout the world.

MSCI applies its index construction and maintenance methodology consistently across developed, emerging and frontier markets. This consistent approach makes it possible to aggregate individual country and industry indices to create meaningful composite, regional, sector and industry benchmarks.

MSCI global equity indices are available in local, USD and Euro denominations, with or without dividends reinvested. MSCI also publishes over 9,000 indices in real time, calculating price, net and gross index levels

MSCI US Domestic Equity Indices

In 2003, MSCI launched its US Equity Indices to provide broad and deep coverage of the US domestic equity market across market capitalization sizes, value and growth investment styles and sector groups. The MSCI US Equity Indices aim to deliver a comprehensive representation of the US equity market and its segments, with:

  • Quarterly index reviews
  • Consistent methodology principles across global markets
  • A focus on  index investability and replicability
  • Unique buffer rules to moderate index turnover
  • A robust value and growth style methodology
  • GICS® (with the longest sector history available in the market)

The implementation of a new “building block” approach to its index construction and maintenance processes in 2008 (the Global Investable Market Index Methodology) enabled MSCI to provide exhaustive, transparent and consistent equity coverage across more than 70 countries—country by country, size segment by size segment, sector by sector. The resulting MSCI USA indices are designed for investors wishing to access the equity markets of the USA in a comprehensive and consistent global context; the characteristics of the MSCI USA indices are comparable to those of the MSCI US Domestic Equity Indices which were constructed prior to the Global Investable Market Index methodology.
